The Power of Habituation

Humans are naturally designed to adapt to our immediate environments. It stems from convenience. When we act from an auto-pilot mode, we conserve energy. In the sense, we don't require energy to think before we act.

We also have mirror neurons that teach us to act attuned to our environment. It includes the weather and how our body adapts to it, and the society and culture, where we act in accordance with the social systems.

This system of internal habituation allows us to have a speck of control, while being a part of a world where everything else is outside our realm of control.

These behaviours allow us to become familiar and respond appropriately to our environment. It allows us to navigate our cultural system in kind. It is a form of unconscious control that emerges naturally within us.

This habitation structure also allows us to acquaint with other humans and form relationships based on the ways that they emotionally, intellectually, and socially function. Our internal navigation system allows us to pick traits and make choices based on what makes sense to our natural system.

When our environment is absorbed into our daily patterns, we respond accordingly. We pick up our ways of being based on the people and the culture around us.

Sometimes, this habituation can hinder our true nature. This is because societal systems do not naturally accept people for who they are within. We have been trained to look for external traits that reflect the inherent value of a person. However, in reality, the inherent value of a person comes from their individual selves - their life experiences, thought processes, and the way they respond to life's circumstances towards emotional and social development.

At this time being aware of our day to day patterns and behaviours allows us to take into account all the traits that we need to keep to ourselves as anchor, and all those that we need to let go.

Awareness provides us with the wisdom to decide which patterns of our life can be habituated as purposeful, and the other patterns that can be let go of.

Through our life experiences, we learn to sort out beliefs that is deemed true for us. With these qualities, we can express our sense of individuality, while maintaining our social connections with empathy, compassion and communication.

Our differences create space for possibilities, connection and shared ways of being.
