It's been close to a year since I started my fitness journey. I started it to basically lose extra skin. Also, around that time I was running as well, so needed to train to get stronger with that.
Fitness is an explorative journey, when done purposefully, you get better at every step of the way. So give it time. Challenge your body, treat it with respect, love it, embrace it and you'll see how it amazes you in ways you never thought possible.
Do it for your mind & body, and it will definitely thank you.
1. Find out the kind of workout that works for you AND you thoroughly enjoy doing - yoga, Zumba, weight lifting, Pilates, HIIT, cross fit, a mix of all, whatever it is that suits you. It should be something that gets you eager to get out of bed and do it with a smile on your face. The intent always is body mobility
2. Work on your form. It may take time when you're just beginning or new to a workout, but from there you only keep getting better and better at it. If you try rushing with a form or do it incorrectly, you're at a risk of injuring yourself. Workout in front of a mirror or ask a person who knows the form well, or as always, you can always YouTube it.
3. Charged up - You're a lot more energized to tackle the entire day, and with proper nutrition, you're just unstoppable.
4. One Day at Time - A push-up or a burpee for instance. You just have to keep trying till you get the form right and slowly increase the reps. You get stronger every time you increase 5 reps. Don't believe me? Try it! :)
3. Warm-ups and cool-downs are important. Your body is a machine, and it needs to prepare for a kickass workout
4. You learn to push yourself beyond the boundaries that you created for yourself. I did. And I'm not the person who I was anymore. I have learned to go beyond my comfort zone and learned to challenge myself and get better at things - be it workouts or anything in life in general.
5. FOOD IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. The moment I realized the importance of this, I started loving and devouring food immensely. Know how you know? Because you start feeling it.
6. Progress - I have come to believe that progress is measured by how you feel.
7. Surprise your body. I'm someone who needs things to be different every day. So depending on what I feel at the time of workout, I do it. This is how I learned to get in tune with my body. Variety is GREAT! :D
8. Workout because you love your body. Because you want to stronger, quicker, lengthier & more flexible and see what it can do if you don't set boundaries for yourself.
9. Embracing the journey. You get better everyday. There are highs and lows all the time. Accept your low days, because you did try that day, and embrace your high days because you know you earned it. Each day you may cross a milestone at different things like maybe you did burpees for 1 minute without stopping or 20 push-ups without stopping.
10. Hydrate. This is most important as sometimes people make the mistake of not drinking enough water while working out. This could cause dizziness. Don't wreck your body. There's no need to gulp down the hydration, but little sips at a time would prove really beneficial.
11. Challenge yourself. Push yourself a little more everyday. Wake up five minutes earlier than you usually do, do those 5 extra push-ups, plank for 10 extra seconds, wake up as soon as your alarm rings without letting your mind give you a reason to stay in bed. Trick your brain. Be louder than that voice in your head that says you're comfortable right now. You grow beyond that threshold of your comfort zone.
12. Just one word - Balanced Diet - Colourful, fresh, local and in-season fruits and veggies
13. Do the workout you hate the most! Chances are you hate it because it's difficult. But once you start investing your time into it, you slowly start to love it! And your receive the works - you get better at it, you get even stronger, and you're up for new challenges. That's how I now love burpees and challenge myself with the variations, the reps, etc.
14. Celebrate everyday just because! :)
Healthy looks different on different bodies. I have learned to workout for the way it makes me feel and the unstoppable energy I get out of it.
Consistency is the key. The most important thing I had to take up here was discipline. It was purely based on trial and error. So although it was a physical journey, it was more a mental one. I got to know myself so much more. The experience has been immensely rewarding, even to date.
Fitness is a lifestyle, a long-term deal. Everyone is at their own stage and pace, so you can't really compare two different journeys. If you're looking for a sign to begin this journey of an overall health and self-awareness, this is it. You got this!
