Awareness is the quality of noticing our reflex behaviours. It teaches us to take a step back and continue as observers. This allows us to reflect on our inherent behavioural patterns and beliefs - the narratives that drive our behaviours.
How is this crucial to cultivate human connections and enhance our sense of self?
Awareness enables us to zoom out and comprehend objectively. That there's more than what meets the eye. Our perception is close to that of a speck, even if it is illusory.
It allows us to glance into that objectivity and comprehend the ever-changing role of our subjective experience. In fact, it even teaches us to craft a suitable response, based on the context. Thus, it allows us to validate our nuanced experiences while extending compassion towards our loved ones and those present with us.
Cultivating awareness of our experiences is the key to relating to and enhancing our existing relationships with the external world. It also inspires us to improve our relationships with our fellow humans with empathy and compassion—a general understanding that all of us are built from different experiences. Therefore, we show up with various capacities, communicate what we can comprehend, and express ourselves differently.
Most importantly, awareness teaches us the art of letting go. When we are expanding our consciousness from our limited worldviews, the process nudges us to leave behind all that we have known so far. This can bring forth a sense of emotional instability, yet teaches us to create a home with the broken pieces of our shattered illusions.
It teaches us accountability for our role in the world around us.
